The first wind turbine has been installed in Germany’s largest offshore wind farm, “Borkum Riffgrund 3”, on behalf of Ørsted.
The first wind turbine has been installed at the “Borkum Riffgrund 3” offshore wind farm. This important milestone was reached shortly after the successful feed-in of the first electricity from the “Gode Wind 3” offshore wind farm, which is being built at the same time.
Together, the two offshore wind farms will almost double Ørsted ‘s total installed capacity in Germany and make an important contribution to Germany’s green transformation, according to the company.
Construction off Borkum without subsidies
“Borkum Riffgrund 3” is due to be connected to the grid next year. According to the information provided, it is a record-breaking project: once commissioned, it will be the largest wind farm in Germany to date, with an installed capacity of 913 MW. It is also the first project in the world to be built without subsidies.
The realisation is made possible primarily by long-term power purchase agreements that Ørsted has concluded with industrial and technology customers. The new wind farm is owned equally by Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure.
The first turbine was installed by the installation vessel “Seaway Ventus” from Seaway7. The “Wind Osprey” from Cadeler was also involved. A total of 83 Siemens Gamesa turbines with a nominal output of 11 MW each will be installed in the wind farm. “Borkum Riffgrund 3” is located around 72 km off the coast of Lower Saxony and covers an area of around 75 km².
In 2024, Ørsted says it will realise the largest construction pipeline in the company’s history with a total of around 7.6 GW of offshore wind on three continents, including “Hornsea 3” with 2.8 GW off the UK, currently the largest offshore wind farm in the world. At the beginning of May, Ørsted celebrated the successful installation of the first foundation for its offshore wind farm, “Revolution Wind” (704 MW), off the US East Coast.
