The container carrier Tailwind, owned by the discounter Lidl, continues to charter additional ships to compensate for longer transit times.
The reason for this is the crisis in the Red Sea. Like many other shipping companies, Tailwind is also running the 14-day Asia-Europe service around the Cape of Good Hope. In addition, the “Panda” service, previously operated with five Panamax ships, now ends in Barcelona – the former ports of call Koper (Slovenia) and Moerdijk (Netherlands) are served via transhipment cargo. The “Faith” (917 TEU) and the “Wilhelmine” (1,118 TEU) were recently chartered for the newly created “Pax Medsea Feeder” (PMF) shuttle service to Koper.
On the long-haul route, there had already been additional departures in December with the extra loaders “Tiger” (2,524 TEU) and the “Zhong Gu Dong Hai” (1,912 TEU).
These were joined by the “Asiatic Neptune” (1,134 TEU), the “Kumasi” (2,207 TEU) and the “Chattanooga” (1,042 TEU) for departures from Ningbo and/or Qingdao in China. The brand new “BG Green” (1,380 TEU) was also booked on its maiden and positioning voyage to Europe.
Extra loader for Tailwind
The “CSL Manhattan” (built in 2005, 5,043 TEU) is now being added as a further extra loader. According to broker reports, Tailwind has chartered the Hyundai-built wide beam for 80-110 days at a daily rate of USD 22,750.
“With this and other ships chartered at short notice, we are ensuring that we and our customers have sufficient capacity available despite the longer transit time,” the company told HANSA.
