Sustainable fuels: Meta concludes agreement with Norden

The Danish shipping company Norden has reached an agreement with Meta.

The technology group, which is behind Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, among others, intends to reduce the emissions of its supply chains.

“We are proud to add Meta to our growing list of customers who want to decarbonise their maritime supply chains,” said Anne Jensen, COO at Norden. Both companies share a common commitment to high standards and the further development of decarbonisation of maritime transport, as demonstrated by their participation on the Board of Directors of the “Book and Claim” community.

Norden passes on CO2 reduction to Meta

This emissions reduction solution works by burning biofuel on a Norden-operated vessel and allocating the emissions reduction to a third-party customer, in this case, Meta, using a book and claim chain of custody system. The ISCC( International Sustainability and Carbon Certification)-certified biofuel has an emission reduction potential of 80-90% over the entire life cycle and is a substitute that can be used by existing ships. The emission reduction is certified by an independent verification body, Normec Verifavia, and is handled by 123Carbon via an external registry.

“Our book and claim solution enables maritime customers worldwide to benefit from emission reductions from biofuels, even if biofuels are not physically available on a particular trade lane or voyage,” Jensen added. The solution has been developed to enable Norden’s direct customers and those in other industries that are dependent on maritime transport and want to decarbonize their supply chains to credibly invest in maritime decarbonisation.

“At Meta, we have set ourselves the goal of achieving net-zero emissions across our value chain by 2030. To achieve this goal, we are working to address the sources of emissions throughout the supply chain – including the upstream emissions associated with the maritime transportation of supply chain goods such as computer equipment and building materials,” commented Devon Lake, Head of Net Zero Strategy at Meta. “Innovative solutions like Norden’s are critical for companies like Meta to decarbonise our value chain at the pace and scale required to achieve our emissions reduction goals.”
