Stolt-Nielsen buys into the bunker business

Stolt-Nielsen acquires all of Golar LNG’s shares in Avenir LNG for US$40m, adding a number of LNG bunker barges to its fleet.

Golar LNG was one of the founding shareholders of Avenir LNG. The sale reportedly follows the strategic decision to focus on the FSRU segment.

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2025. Upon completion of the transaction, Stolt-Nielsen Gas Ltd. will control approximately 94.37% of the voting rights in Avenir LNG.

Avenir LNG is an industry leader in the LNG bunkering sector. The fleet currently comprises five units, with two newbuildings on order. According to CEO Udo Lange, Stolt-Nielsen wants to expand its own position in the LNG sector and continue to grow.

The shipping company, founded in 1959 and listed on the Oslo stock exchange, has been a partner in the tanker segment of the long-established Hamburg shipping company John T. Essberger since the end of 2020. The joint venture operates parcel tankers in European traffic.
