ANDRITZ to showcase ZAP technology at SMM

Andritz manufactures controllable-pitch propellers (CPP) at its Ravensburg site for mega yachts and a wide range of specialised vessels. The company’s in-house technology is designed to reduce hydraulic pressure levels while improving hydrodynamic efficiency and lowering noise emissions. The portfolio also includes seven-bladed propellers and air insufflating systems.

As the maritime industry continues its transition towards decarbonisation, retrofit solutions are becoming increasingly important for shipowners seeking to reduce emissions without replacing existing vessels.

In this context, Andritz will present its ZAP (zero emission auxiliary propulsor) technology at SMM 2026. Designed as an additional, fully independent propulsion unit, ZAP combines a compact electric propulsion concept with a controllable-pitch propeller tailored to the vessel’s main propulsor. The system is intended for both retrofit applications and newbuildings.

Developed as part of an IFB Hamburg-funded research project, ZAP has been created in collaboration with Siemens Energy, Hamburg University of Technology, TUI Cruises and other project partners. The system enables ships to operate on a separate onboard electrical power grid while the main propulsion system is shut down. According to Andritz, it also increases redundancy and operational availability. Depending on the configuration, ZAP can be powered by batteries, fuel cells or generator sets operating on e-fuels.

Installed as an auxiliary propulsion unit integrated into the ship’s rudder, the system is designed to provide additional operational flexibility and support a wider range of applications.
