ProfiSeal presents certified fireproof bulkhead seals

ProfiSeal, based in Schornsheim, specialises in sealing and bearing technology for commercial and recreational shipping. In 2015, the company introduced what it describes as the world’s first fireproof bulkhead seal. Since then, more than 100 systems have been delivered.

With more than 25 years of experience in sealing and bearing technology, ProfiSeal develops and manufactures sterntube and bulkhead seals for the shipbuilding and yachting industries. Its fireproof bulkhead seal for drive shafts is designed to release carbon dioxide inside the seal in the event of a fire, protecting the sealing rings by smothering the fire at the point of origin. According to the company, this prevents a fire in the engine room from spreading further into the vessel.

The automatic fire-smothering process is made possible by split sealing rings manufactured from synthetic carbon without the PTFE additives commonly used in standard seals. The bulkhead seal is also clad and insulated with the classified insulation material Firemaster.

The system is certified to A-60 fire resistance, is watertight and has received type approval in accordance with the IMO 2010 FTP Code, Part 3, and MSC85/26, Add. 1, Annex 22.

With more than 100 systems sold, ProfiSeal has recently reached what the company describes as an important milestone.

“It is quite something to be the world’s first supplier of a particular product,” says Managing Director Tobias Müller. “We are more than pleased that the product has been so well received and that we have thus been able to make an important contribution to fire protection on ships.”
