Port of Gothenburg sets new TEU record

Scandinavia’s largest port, Gothenburg, achieved a new record year last year. With 934,000 containers (TEU) handled, the port recorded the highest annual volume in its history.

Compared to 2024, this corresponds to growth of 4%. According to the Swedish port authority , the main drivers of this development are the expanded range of liner services, including two new direct connections to Asia, as well as the efficient rail connection. A total of 529,000 TEU were transported by rail via Railport Scandinavia in 2025, an increase of 5% and also a new record. The rail share of container hinterland traffic is therefore over 60%.

“The record figures show that the port has further strengthened its role as a logistics hub,” emphasizes Claes Sundmark, Vice President Sales & Marketing. In addition to the growing supply, the tight capacity situation in other European ports has also attracted additional volumes to Gothenburg.

Container throughput in Gothenburg also grew significantly faster than the national average compared to the other Swedish ports.

In intra-European RoRo traffic, 525,000 units were handled, roughly maintaining the previous year’s level. As the largest vehicle port in the Nordic countries, Gothenburg handled 251,000 new cars. Despite a weak start to the year, the decline was only 2% thanks to a strong recovery in the fourth quarter.

In the energy sector, 20.7 million tons were handled. Following a decline in the first half of the year due to maintenance work, the segment stabilized as the year progressed, resulting in a decline of 5% for the year as a whole.

Passenger traffic increased slightly in 2025: A total of 1.41 million travelers used the port (+1%). The number of cruise ship calls rose significantly by 13% to 63.

With a record handling volume of 934,000 TEU, the port is building on decades of growth and consolidating its position as the largest container port in Scandinavia.
