The Remontowa Shipbuilding shipyard in Gdansk is to build two new survey vessels. The client is the Polish Navy.
The shipyard will build the two new hydrographic vessels, including logistical support packages. With their specialized equipment, they are designed for the acquisition, collection and processing of geospatial data.
The ships will be able to perform geographic, navigational and hydrographic support tasks for the Polish armed forces and their allies at home and abroad. They will also be able to exchange data with comparable NATO systems.
The new vessels will be around 60 m long, have a beam of approximately 13 m, a range of about 5,000 nm and a top speed of 13 knots.
The newbuildings will replace the two hydrographic support vessels “ORP Heweliusz” and “ORP Arctowski”. The ships were designed and built as sister ships at the former Stocznia Północna (now Remontowa Shipbuilding) and have been in service with the Polish Navy since 1982.
The contract was signed by Major General Artur Kuptel and Dariusz Jaguszewski, President of the Management Board of Remontowa Shipbuilding. The ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, Poland’s government representative for the EU defense program SAFE.
The contract for the construction project with the working title “Hydrograf” has a volume of € 354 million (1.5 billion złoty).
“The shipyard Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. is a proven and reliable partner. I am convinced that our cooperation on this new project will also be very successful. This contract is an investment in safety, but also in further jobs,” said Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz in Gdansk.
Polish armed forces renew fleet
The Polish navy is currently renewing its fleet. Two reconnaissance ships from the “Delfin” program are currently being built at Remontowa Shipbuildung. These are the 74-metre-long reconnaissance vessels “ORP Henryk Zygalski” and “ORP Jerzy Różycki”. Both units are due to enter service by the end of 2027. They will replace the older vessels “ORP Hydrograf” and “ORP Nawigator”, which were built in the 1970s. The order is worth around €600 million.
The PGZ Stocznia Wojenna shipyard in Gdynia is also currently working on projects for the Polish armed forces. The three frigates “Huragan” and “Burza” are being built there. Delivery of the 138-meter-long ships is planned between 2029 and 2031.
