Performance Shipping christens new tanker

The tanker was christened at the Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding shipyard in Shanghai. The ship is a product/crude oil tanker of the LR2 Aframax class (114,000 dwt), which is to be operated with LNG in the future.

The “P. Massport” is the first of three LNG-capable, scrubber-equipped tankers that Performance Shipping has ordered in China. The sister ships are scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2025 and early 2026.

Five-year contracts for all three tankers have been concluded with Clearlake Shipping from Singapore, a subsidiary of the Gunvor Group. The contract provides for a gross price of $31,000 per day to operate the vessel, with an option to extend for up to two years at a base price plus profit sharing.

“This marks the start of a series of tanker newbuildings for Performance Shipping, which will include two more LR2 Aframax vessels by early 2026 and an LR1 tanker by early 2027,” commented Andreas Michalopulos, CEO of the shipping company. The newbuildings are a “central part” of Performance Shipping’s fleet expansion and renewal. “We are proud to add this state-of-the-art tanker to our fleet and honored to begin this charter with Clearlake Shipping. We would also like to thank Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, one of the world’s leading shipyards, for their outstanding craftsmanship and technical expertise in building this high-quality vessel. We wish the ‘P. Massport’ and her crew all the best for a safe voyage and calm seas.”
