NYK makes debut call at Patimban with “Hyperion Leader”

With the first call of its own car carrier at the Indonesian port of Patimban, the Japanese shipping company NYK says it has tested the operational performance of the vehicle terminal there under practical conditions.

The Japanese shipping company NYK has called at the car terminal in the Indonesian port of Patimban for the first time with its 190 m long Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) “Hyperion Leader”. The first call was celebrated with a ceremony together with the terminal company PT Patimban International Car Terminal (PICT).

Patimban to relieve Jakarta

NYK holds a 25% stake in PICT, the operator of the vehicle terminal. The port of Patimban, around 120 km east of Jakarta, has been gradually expanded since 2018 and is primarily intended to relieve the chronically overloaded capacities at the port of Tanjung Priok. At the same time, the site is intended to facilitate imports and exports for the Indonesian automotive industry.

According to NYK, the purpose of the start-up was to test the terminal’s operating processes under real conditions. At the same time, another logistics option for vehicle transportation in Indonesia was to be presented to those involved.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Indonesian port and customs authorities, the Japanese embassy in Indonesia, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), automobile manufacturers and PICT shareholders.

Capacity for up to 800,000 vehicles

Other shareholders of PICT are the Toyota Tsusho Group with 34%, Toyofuji Shipping with 26% and Kamigumi with 15%. After completion of the ongoing expansion, which is scheduled for this summer, the terminal will have a quay length of 690 m, a water depth of 12.5 m and a storage area of around 36 ha. The annual handling capacity is estimated at up to 800,000 vehicles.

According to NYK, Patimban is set to play a major role in the Indonesian vehicle logistics market. The terminal also has large parking areas and a 24-hour monitoring system.
