The Peene shipyard, which belongs to Lürssen, has delivered the first unit of three new customs vessels. They run on LNG as fuel.
The ship had previously been successfully transferred from NVL’s Wolgast site to its future base in Emden. All new ships of the General Customs Directorate will be equipped with a more environmentally friendly LNG propulsion system.
“With the successful delivery of the first ship today, we have reached an important milestone on schedule,” said Harald Jaekel, Managing Director of Peene-Werft. The project also makes an important contribution to the shipyard’s capacity utilization.
Customs vessels will run on LNG
“With the approximately 55-metre-long ships, Customs is consistently implementing the German government’s mobility and fuel strategy and starting the renewal of its fleet with more climate and environmentally friendly ships,” added project manager André Schönrock.
Accordingly, these ships are designed exclusively for the use of LNG (liquefied natural gas) as a fuel. “With our experience in the development and implementation of innovative technologies, we are pleased to make an important contribution to more sustainable shipping and to support customs in the modernization of its fleet.”
The primary task of the ocean-going vessels, which are made of aluminum, is to control and monitor the cross-border movement of goods within the territory and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, the ships will have medical treatment capabilities, external fire-fighting equipment and emergency towing capabilities. The ships are designed for eight crew members.
