MPP carrier Swire launches branch in Malaysia

The MPP and feeder shipping company Swire Shipping wants to boost its business in Southeast Asia with a new branch in Malaysia.

The carrier, which is also well known in this country as a charterer of MPP tonnage, has opened a new branch in Kuala Lumpur. According to a press release, this is a “milestone” that “underlines the company’s ongoing commitment to Southeast Asia and strengthens its service throughout the region.”

Swire says it operates a fleet with a total capacity of 760,000 tdw on 13 routes. The group, which also includes China Navigation Co., specializes in container, project, heavy lift, general cargo and mini-bulk shipments – with a focus on intra-Asian, Australasian and Polynesian traffic. Hamburg-based broker Toepfer Tranport ranks the carrier eighth in the global MPP market with a market share of 2.91%.

“Malaysia is an important and growing market for Swire Shipping,” said Randy Selvaratnam, Chief Commercial Officer. “Opening our own office in Kuala Lumpur allows us to be closer to our customers, respond more quickly to local needs and further strengthen our commitment to service excellence across the region.”

The newly established team in Malaysia will be led by Koon Yan Tan, former Head of Swire Shipping Agency in Singapore. He takes on the expanded role of Head of Agencies in Singapore and Malaysia. Also joining the team in Kuala Lumpur are several employees who have supported the company for many years at Ben Line Agencies Malaysia.
