Modernization of Polish naval shipyard in full swing

The Polish naval shipyard PGZ Stocznia Wojenna is currently being modernized at a cost of around PLN 300 million (approx. € 70 million). Among other things, the shipyard is being given new halls, quay walls and the associated infrastructure.

The renovation work began in 2022 and is progressing according to plan, according to the general contractor. Around 45% of the work has already been completed, it says. Completion of the measures is scheduled for next fall.

The work is closely linked to the implementation of the “Miecznik” program, which provides for the construction of three multi-purpose frigates for the Polish Navy. The central objective of this investment was the construction of a new shipbuilding hall in which the hulls of the three frigates will be manufactured in future. The project is considered a key project for the realization of the “Miecznik” program and will significantly increase the production capacities of PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, it is further stated.

The new hull construction hall is the highest of its kind in Polish shipbuilding and is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe. The consortium commissioned with the implementation – the NDI Group – is also responsible for the expansion and redesign of the quay, storage areas and internal roads as well as the modernization of the technical infrastructure on the shipyard site.

Working in three shifts

According to the NDI Group, around half of the work has been completed. Upcoming tasks include the construction of a new warehouse. In addition, a shelter for technical gases is being built on the shipyard site, which should improve the storage conditions for special materials. Another important component is the conversion of part of building A-36 into a modern porter’s lodge with a covered access gate. The refurbishment of another existing building and the expansion of the CCTV surveillance system are also planned.

“We are currently implementing a project for the client to comprehensively renew the above-ground and underground infrastructure. As part of the same project, we are also modernizing existing halls that are used for shipbuilding,” explains Przemysław Młynarczyk, Construction Manager at the NDI Group.

“The biggest challenge is the tight time frame. However, we are doing everything we can to keep to this – including working in three shifts. The old underground supply infrastructure poses an additional structural challenge, as does the fact that we are working on the site of a running plant where production continues uninterrupted. We are therefore organizing our work in such a way that operations can continue undisturbed. The completion of our measures is planned for the fall of this year. The project is currently around 45% complete and we are right on schedule,” continues the site manager.

PGZ contributes to national defense

In addition to the construction work, the comprehensive renewal of the road and infrastructure network is also part of the project. This includes new storage areas and internal access roads. The total area will be around 31,000 m².

“We have been working as a general contractor on the PGZ shipyard site in Gdynia for over two years now. We are very pleased to be able to implement another such important project for the defense capability of our country,” emphasizes Przemysław Młynarczyk.

All newly constructed buildings will be equipped with modern sanitary, electrical and IT systems to ensure maximum functionality. The planned total duration of the investment is twelve months. The modernization will significantly improve the organization of transport and logistics at the shipyard. The investor of the project is PGZ Stocznia Wojenna in Gdynia.
