Greek shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis is now also surfing the latest wave of new container ship construction. He has ordered six ships in China.
In view of the large number of orders, Chinese shipyards are continuing to expand their capacities. One example of this is New Times Shipbuilding (NTS). An additional dock is being built on the banks of the lower Yangtze – and this means that the shipyard has more building sites available for potential customers.
Evangelos Marinakis and his company Capital Maritime & Trading are seizing the opportunity: According to a report by Alphaliner, he has now ordered six container ships from NTS, each with a capacity of 8,400 TEU. They are equipped with dual-fuel engines for using gas (LNG) as fuel.
Marinakis follows other shipowners
This follows a series of orders that have been placed very recently. At NTS alone, eight 18,000 TEU vessels from Idan Ofers Eastern Pacific, five 16,800 TEU vessels from John Fredriksen’s SFL and an as yet unconfirmed five 16,800 TEU vessels from Seaspan have been added to the order book.
In contrast to the other shipowners, Marinakis is said to have ordered speculatively, i.e. without existing charter contracts, according to Alphaliner. Delivery is scheduled for 2027. The price per ship is said to be around US$125m.
In addition to the firm orders, four options for sister ships have been agreed according to the report, which could be put into service by 2028.
