Man goes overboard and falls into the freezing Elbe

A crew member from the Philippines falls from a ship on the Elbe off Otterndorf. He was pulled out of the ice-cold water in time.

The crew of a dredging vessel has rescued a Filipino sailor from the Elbe. The 29-year-old fell from a more than 190-metre-long freighter between buoys 44 and 46 near Otterndorf on Saturday night while working, according to the German Maritime Search and Rescue Association. [ds_preview]

The “Athina L” (Liberia flag) remained in the sea area, but was unable to maneuver well due to its length. At the same time, the Dutch dredger “Pieter Caland” was also sailing on the Lower Elbe. The crew discovered the light on the seaman’s lifejacket. The rescued man climbed on board using the deployed pilot ladder.

Sea rescuers from the rescue cruiser “Anneliese Kramer” treated the hypothermic man and brought him to Cuxhaven at top speed. He was taken to hospital.

At the time of the accident, the weather in the sea area was calm with light snowfall, an air temperature of around -1° C and a water temperature of 5° C.
