The shipping company Lomar Shiping has sealed its exit from container shipping. Almost 100 ships have been sold since 2020, now with just the last one from the fleet.
Lomar Shipping is also a well-known address in Germany, especially in Bremen. The shipping company boss Achim Boehme, who passed away four years ago, had worked there successfully for many years. Most recently, Lomar took over the long-established company Carl Büttner and its tanker fleet just over a year and a half ago. [ds_preview]
The Greek-British Logothetis family also sees potential for shipping activities in the coming years in the tanker and bulker business, which currently has around 30 ships. In recent years, it has gradually disposed of almost 100 container ships worth more than US$2bn. In return, it has invested US$127m in additional bulk carriers in the past twelve months alone.
Lomar focuses on innovation
New growth drivers for the Libra Group are the topics of “innovation and sustainability”, said CEO George Logothetis in an interview with Reuters. The company saw a good strategic opportunity to sell at good prices.
Lomar is known for acting anti-cyclically. Once before, between 2004 and 2007, the shipping arm of the Libra Group sold off almost all of its ships in order to build up a large fleet again.
Headquartered in the USA, the group now consists of 20 subsidiaries operating in the shipping, aerospace, renewable energy, real estate, hospitality and other sectors.
Last year, the innovation division lomarlabs was founded to research new maritime technologies, including carbon capture, robotics and wind sailing. The spin-off also cooperates with Isabel Rickmers’ start-up Turtle.
