KR’s Lee Jungkun appointed chair of IACS safety committee

The Safety Committee of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), a key body for classification work, is getting a new chairman.

Lee Jungkun from the Korean Register (KR) will assume the position on January 1, 2026, as the classification society has now announced. The expert was elected for a three-year term at the most recent IACS Council meeting. He succeeds Kathrine Ilje Nerland from the Norwegian-German class DNV.

The Safety Panel is one of the seven technical bodies of the IACS and plays a key role in the development, revision and interpretation of the main international maritime safety regulations. The panel works closely with key regulatory bodies such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Union (EU) and addresses critical safety issues under the IMO conventions.

At KR, Lee Jungkun is the General Manager of the Convention & Legislation Service Team. He graduated from Korea Maritime & Ocean University and joined KR in 2000. He has represented the class on the Safety Panel since 2016.

“As a recognized expert in maritime safety, he has extensive knowledge and practical experience of key safety instruments, including the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), and has actively participated in technical discussions in both the IACS and the IMO,” says KR.

His election as Chairman, which was strongly supported by the twelve IACS member societies, underlines the high regard in which his expertise and leadership are held in the international maritime community.
