Korean Coast Guard orders Rolls-Royce engines

The Korean Coast Guard has launched two programmes for the construction of patrol boats. Rolls-Royce is to supply the engines for the new vessels.

For its 50-tonne programme, the Korean Coast Guard (KCG) has opted for MTU 16V 2000 M96 engines. Rolls-Royce will supply two sets of engines, each comprising two engines, by 2027.

The new vessels will replace older units. According to Rolls-Royce, the KCG plans to procure a total of more than 50 propulsion sets over a period of 15 years.

In addition, the KCG is also relying on MTU 20V 4000 M93L engines for its 500-tonne programme. Rolls-Royce will supply two sets of engines, each comprising two engines, by 2027.

“We are delighted to support the Korean Coast Guard in expanding its fleet with our mtu engines from the 2000 and 4000 series. These engines are designed for reliability, efficiency and performance, ensuring that the Korean Coast Guard can respond quickly and effectively to maritime challenges. Our ongoing partnership and technical support will help to maximise the operational availability and mission success of the Korean Coast Guard,” says Michael Long, Vice President, Sales Governmental, APAC, at Rolls-Royce Power Systems in Asia.

According to Rolls-Royce, both programmes are currently in the planning phase, with the first two shipbuilding contracts scheduled for the second half of this year.
