90% fewer emissions compared to other cruise ships: This is what Selar promises with its first ship “Captain Arctic”.
The keel of the newbuild was recently laid and delivery is scheduled for 2026. The first expeditions to the Arctic are already being marketed.
The ceremony, which took place on November 22 in Dubai, was attended by representatives of the ship’s owner Selar, the outfitter Goltens, the shipyard Chantier Naval de l’Ocean Indien (CNOI) and the classification society Bureau Veritas, among others.
“We are excited and pleased to be working with Goltens on this transformative voyage. This ship is not only an investment in sustainable tourism, but also a commitment to preserving the natural wonders of our planet,” said Selar CEO Sophie Galvagnon.
Goltens CEO Sandeep Seth commented: “The ceremony was a testament to the spirit of innovation and collaboration that drives Goltens. Selar and CNOI have commissioned us to build a vessel that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of the modern maritime industry. The project reflects our shared commitment to sustainability, innovation and a greener future for the oceans.”
He added that the “Captain Arctic” represents the first expedition ship of its kind in the luxury cruise sector. Together, the companies want to “push the boundaries of sustainable ship technology”, the companies announced. Particularly with regard to the sensitive ecosystem of the Arctic, it is important to focus on environmental friendliness.
“Captain Arctic” runs on wind and sun
The 70-metre-long ship will primarily use renewable energy sources for propulsion, which will reduce CO2 emissions by 90% compared to conventional ships. The majority of the energy is to be generated from five wind sails, each 35 m high, which are equipped with solar cells over an area of 2,000 m2. Similar to the “eSails” from Spanish start-up Bound4Blue, they can be folded up when required.
The “Captain Arctic” will offer space for 24 crew members and 36 passengers. In future, Selar wants to use the ship to offer luxury cruises and adventure trips to the Arctic. The first trips for 2026, on which visitors will be able to watch orcas, ski in the fjords or dive in the Arctic Ocean, for example, are already fully booked.
