Inmarsat Maritime presents ClassNK-certified NexusWave

NexusWave is designed to provide maritime connectivity for ship operators as digitalisation increases and demand grows for reliable onboard communications.

Since its launch, Inmarsat Maritime’s fully managed, bonded connectivity service has secured more than 3,000 vessel orders from operators including MOL, Pacific Basin, “K” Line, Auerbach, Evergreen, EXMAR, Krey Schiffahrt, F.A. Vinnen and Vega Reederei. According to the company, the market response reflects growing demand for connectivity supporting both operational digitalisation and the evolving expectations of seafarers.

Unlike conventional solutions that switch between networks, NexusWave bonds multiple connectivity underlays, including GEO, LEO, LTE and L-band, into a single managed service. According to Inmarsat Maritime, applications can use the best available network while benefiting from the combined capacity of multiple networks where available. The company states that the service delivers uptime of more than 99.9%.

During sea trials, NexusWave achieved download speeds of up to 340 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 80 Mbps. Traffic is routed dynamically in real time, allowing business-critical applications, video conferencing, cloud services and crew welfare platforms to continue operating as network conditions change.

According to Inmarsat Maritime, NexusWave supports increasingly data-intensive operations, enabling vessels to function as connected extensions of shore-based offices. For crews, unlimited data and global coverage are intended to provide reliable access to communication, entertainment, learning and wellbeing services.

The company is also continuing the deployment of the ViaSat-3 satellites, which are expected to provide additional capacity and performance across key maritime regions.

Security is also a focus of the service. NexusWave has received Cyber Security Type Approval from ClassNK, confirming compliance with the latest IACS UR E27 cyber security standard for onboard systems and equipment.

According to Inmarsat Maritime, NexusWave combines performance, resilience, security and simplicity in a single managed service to support the next stage of maritime digitalisation.
