The Hamburg-based shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd is filling the post of Chief Operating Officer (COO). Anders Boenaes will join the Executive Board on 1 October. At the same time, the contract of Dheeraj Bhatia, Head of Terminals, has been extended.
Hapag-Lloyd’s Supervisory Board has appointed Anders Boenaes as the new Chief Operating Officer (COO) with effect from 1 October. The Danish national has previously served as Senior Managing Director Network and is a member of the company’s Executive Committee.
With Boenaes’ appointment, the shipping company has also filled a vacancy on the Executive Board that has been open since the end of June: his predecessor, Maximilian Rothkopf, who had been responsible for operations since 2019, stepped down on 30 June.
In his current role, Boenaes is responsible for Hapag-Lloyd’s global liner network, the container fleet and global operational processes. According to the company, he also played a key role in establishing and implementing the Gemini Cooperation with Maersk.
Boenaes, born in 1974, began his career in 1993 at Maersk inCopenhagen. There, he held various management positions, including Vice President and Head of Africa Trades, and later Senior Vice President Network in the Liner Business. He moved to Hapag-Lloyd in 2020.
“Anders Boenaes is the ideal candidate for the role of COO,” explained Karl Gernandt, Chairman of the Supervisory Board. Boenaes possesses both extensive operational experience and in-depth knowledge of the company.
Bhatia to remain in post until at least the end of 2029
Meanwhile, the Supervisory Board has extended the contract of Chief Terminal & Infrastructure Officer Dheeraj Bhatia until 31 December 2029. Bhatia has been a member of Hapag-Lloyd’s Executive Board since January 2024 and is also CEO of Hanseatic Global Terminals. The shipping company consolidates its holdings and activities in the terminals and infrastructure sector within this company.
Born in 1973, the executive was previously responsible, amongst other things, for Hapag-Lloyd’s Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa region. Under his leadership, Hanseatic Global Terminals has been developed into a global terminal platform, explained Gernandt.
