Hanse Bereederung expands its S&P business

Hanse Bereederung, part of the Schoeller Group, intends to expand its sale and purchase business and strengthen its presence in Asia. The company made the announcement to mark its 50th anniversary.

The aim is also to attract new customers, making the most of the company’s integration into the Columbia Group. The company currently operates in the areas of chartering, sale and purchase, operations and pool management. According to its own figures, the fleet it manages comprises around 50 vessels. A large proportion of these are multi-purpose vessels operated by Australia Asia Line. In addition, Hanse Bereederung controls around 20 box carriers. The company is also active in bulk carrier chartering, including Kamsarmax vessels.

From multi-purpose vessels to a broader market presence

Hanse Bereederung was founded in 1976, initially to manage smaller multi-purpose vessels. One of the key milestones was the arrival of Heinrich Schoeller. He initially acquired a 50 per cent stake in 1982 and later purchased the remaining shares. This led to a long-term relationship with the tonnage controlled by Schoeller. It later also formed the basis for the company’s integration into the Columbia Group.

In 1986, Hanse Bereederung expanded its own chartering activities. That year, the first fixture for Bengal Tiger Line was concluded with the ‘Auriga’. The vessel was chartered for voyages between Singapore and India. According to the company, this developed into a long-term business relationship.

“An important milestone”

“50 years is an important milestone, but our focus is on the next phase of the company’s development,” emphasises Michael Zankl, Managing Director of Chartering/S&P at Hanse Bereederung. He notes that the company has remained a close-knit team, whilst diversifying its operations across chartering, S&P, operations and pool management. Zankl sees further potential, in particular, in the sale and purchase business and in Asia.

Andreas Hadjipetrou, CEO of the Columbia Group, described the anniversary as an important moment for the group. Columbia intends to support the team in the further expansion of the business.
