The shipping company AtoB@C Shipping, part of the Finnish ESL Group, has taken delivery of its latest hybrid MPP newbuild from an Indian shipyard.
The “Terramar” is the sixth vessel in a series built at the Chowgule Shipyard in Goa. AtoB@C receives a total of six vessels of this type, each with a deadweight of 5,400 tons and plug-in hybrid propulsion technology.
Like its sister ships, the “Terramar” features a hybrid drive system and shore power connection. “With a carrying capacity of 5,400 tons and ice class 1A, the ‘Terramar‘ is designed for efficient and sustainable year-round operations in the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe,” states the shipping company. Originally founded as a joint venture between the Leer-based shipping group Briese and Swedish businessman Anders Nilsson, AtoB@C is now part of ESL Shippingand the Finnish conglomerate Aspo.
AtoB@C new building program is on track
The integration of state-of-the-art battery technology will enable the “Terramar” to make emission-free and quiet port calls, reducing CO₂ emissions per loading unit by almost 50% compared to the current generation of ships.
According to Frida Rowland, Commercial Director and Head of BU Coasters at ESL Shipping and AtoB@C Shipping, the newbuilding program is on track, with one vessel expected to be delivered each quarter until autumn 2026. The seventh ship in the series, “Biomar”, was launched on March 2, while steel cutting for the eleventh vessel, “Megamar,” took place in February.
The shipping company currently operates a fleet of 35 vessels ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 dwt. Together with ESL, the combined fleet consists of 51 freighters ranging from 3,000 to 56,000 dwt.
