Another Houthi attack in the Gulf of Aden: a Genco Shipping bulker has been hit by a missile. The EU wants to become militarily involved in the region.
Genco Shipping & Trading has confirmed that one of its Supramax bulkers, the “Genco Picardy” (55,250 tdw, built in 2005), was hit by an “unidentified projectile” while transiting the Gulf of Aden. The crew was uninjured, according to reports. A fire that broke out on board was extinguished. [ds_preview]
Huthi on the US terror list
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the attack was launched about 52 nm southeast of Aden from Huthi-controlled areas in Yemen. The “Genco Picardy” was on its way from Safaga (Egypt) to Thoothukudi in India. It was reportedly traveling along the recommended transit corridor.
Just a few days ago, an Eagle Bulk ship and a US destroyer were attacked. The Iranian-backed Huthi movement has now been placed on the list of terrorist organizations by the USA. In addition, further airstrikes were flown on suspected Huthi positions. It was the fourth direct attack by US and British units in four days.
EU plans anti-Huthi mission
The EU mission, which is to be approved at a meeting of foreign ministers on February 19, is to be launched by the end of February. Germany intends to participate with the frigate “Hessen”.
It is likely that the maritime surveillance mission “Agenor” to secure the Strait of Hormuz will be extended to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Seven EU countries are currently involved on a voluntary basis. The EU ships are to accompany individual vessels and, if necessary, intervene with armed force to shoot down Huthi missiles and drones.
