Gasum supplies Hapag-Lloyd with waste-based bio-LNG

Gasum will supply Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet with a total of 20,000 tons of waste-based bio-LNG in 2025-2026.

Energy company Gasum is working with Hapag-Lloyd to supply its container ships with liquefied biomethane (Bio-LNG) during a two-year tender period.

Earlier this year, Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world’s leading container shipping companies, won the first Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (Zemba) tender for ocean shipping based on waste-based bio-LNG, which achieves at least a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Zemba is the first buyers group in the maritime sector that aims to accelerate the commercial introduction of zero-emission shipping solutions. Zemba is an initiative of Cargo Owners for Zero Emission Vessels (Cozev) and is supported by the Aspen Institute Energy & Environment Program.

Gasum’s Bio-LNG is used between Rotterdam and Singapore

Gasum will supply Hapag-Lloyd with the required amount of Bio-LNG to fulfil the requirements of the Zemba tender. The Bio-LNG will be used on a route between Rotterdam and Singapore in 2025-2026.

Liquefied biomethane, Bio-LNG, is a fully renewable and environmentally friendly fuel with life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions that are, on average, 90% lower compared to the use of fossil fuels. Biogas can be used in the same applications as natural gas, including as a fuel for road and sea transport and as energy for industry.

Gasum’s biomethane is produced from waste raw materials such as biowaste, sewage sludge, liquid manure and other industrial and agricultural by-products. The solid and liquid residues resulting from biogas production are further processed and used, for example, as fertilizer in agriculture or as a raw material in industrial processes.

Gasum produces biogas in all of its own 17 biogas plants in Finland and Sweden

The energy company is striving to procure more renewable gas to meet the growing demand for sustainable energy. To this end, it produces in its own 17 biogas plants in Finland and Sweden and has also established long-term partnerships with trusted and certified biogas producers across Europe.

Gasum aims to offer its customers 7 TWh of renewable gas annually by 2027, including biomethane and e-methane. Achieving this target would mean a total carbon dioxide reduction of 1.8 million tons per year for Gasum’s customers.

The company can offer bio-LNG bunkering services to all shipping companies whose vessels run on liquefied natural gas, as LNG and bio-LNG are fully interchangeable and can be mixed in any ratio.
