Freudenberg Unveils Maritime Fuel Cell Revolution

Freudenberg e-Power Systems, a global leader in electrical power solutions for heavy-duty applications, is revolutionizing maritime propulsion. With more than 30 years of expertise in fuel cells, their system for maritime application combines high-quality raw materials and components with an ideal operating strategy. Their maritime system excels in harsh conditions, offering high energy efficiency, competitive costs, and minimal maintenance — all without compromising payload or range.

Fuel cell technology also enhances the onboard comfort of passengers and the crew. Unlike noisy combustion engines or generators, these systems significantly reduce disturbances from noise and vibrations, ensuring a smoother journey and stay on board.

For long-distance vessels, such as container or cruise ships, Freudenberg’s maritime fuel cell systems embodies an innovative solution, tackling the question of alternative fuels: By integrating fuel reforming technology, the system converts methanol or liquefied natural gas into hydrogen-rich gas, which powers the ship’s electric systems. These fuels enable net-zero operation, supporting sustainable long-distance shipping.

In addition, the choice of fuel type is critical. While hydrogen offers net-zero potential, its low volumetric energy density requires larger tank spaces. Freudenberg’s systems overcomes this challenge, running on methanol or LNG produced sustainably with green electricity and captured CO₂.

The installation is comparably easy: the compact 500 kW solution offers a modular approach and allows multiple systems to be installed on board, reaching double-digit megawatt outputs for both new builds and retrofits.

Beyond emission reduction, fuel cell technology streamlines ships. It eliminates the need for space-consuming auxiliary systems like exhaust gas treatment. Clever hybridization with small battery systems frees up valuable space, benefiting passenger cabins and cargo areas alike.

Freudenberg e-Power Systems is ready for your journey to a cleaner, more efficient maritime transport.
