The 11,850 TEU “Ever Feat“, built in 2021, encountered severe weather while departing the Brazilian port of Navegantes. The ship arrived in Montevideo on July 29 with damaged holds and containers.
Evergreen has chartered the “Ever Feat” on a long-term basis from Japanese tonnage provider Shoei Kisen Kaisha. The vessel is one of twelve F-class vessels that Shoei Kisen Kaisha’s shipbuilding subsidiary Imabari Shipbuilding has built for Evergreen.
Videos from the accident site show two 40-foot containers hanging from the outside of the “Ever Feat”, while collapsed containers are visible on the deck. Aerial images indicate that at least two cargo holds were affected.
The Uruguayan Port Authority and the Coast Guard are conducting damage assessments and developing plans to safely salvage the affected cargo. According to media reports, some containers were carrying fertilizer. Local logistics provider Swan Logistics stated that some boxes may contain “toxic goods” or be contaminated.
Uruguayan port services company Montecon is working with the fire department and the Uruguayan port administration to salvage the containers. An exclusion zone has been established around the “Ever Feat” to secure the containers safely. The extent of the financial damage is not yet known, but the total cost has not been disclosed.
The “Ever Feat” serves Evergreen’s Far East-South America-East Coast route and calls at Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian, Hong Kong, Singapore, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Navegantes, Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Paranagua.
CMA CGM, Cosco, OOCL and Yang Ming are expected to join the service. Evergreen has not yet responded to a request for comment from HANSA.
