Evergreen orders Megamax units in Korea and China

Evergreen is stepping up its fleet expansion once again. In addition to an earlier newbuilding order, the shipping company has ordered further megamax freighters.

Most recently, the Taiwan-based container shipping company, No. 7 in the global liner ranking, ordered a new series of eleven megamax vessels, each with a capacity of 24,000 TEU. It has now also been confirmed that the order will go to two shipyards in Asia.

Hanwha Ocean (formerly DSME) is building six of the megamax ships, which will be equipped with dual-fuel propulsion systems. They are scheduled for delivery in 2028 and 2029. Evergreen has also commissioned CSSC Guangzhou Shipyard International to build five more vessels of this type, which will also be delivered at the same time as the Hanwha Ocean vessels.

With a fleet capacity of almost 1.8 million TEU, Evergreen is the No. 7 among the largest liner shipping companies and part of the “Ocean Alliance” with CMA CGM, Cosco and OOCL. According to Alphaliner, the newbuilding program already accounted for 806,000 TEU, which corresponds to 45% of the fleet in service. This means that the Taiwanese shipping company has one of the largest order books in the entire industry.
