Emissions trading: Berenberg joins forces with DNV and BSM

Berenberg, Veracity by DNV and BSM develop seamless use of verified emissions data for EUA trading.

Private bank Berenberg, one of the leading banks in the shipping sector, has developed a solution in close cooperation with Veracity, DNV’s data-driven platform, and leading ship manager BSM to significantly simplify EU emissions trading for its clients with the help of automatically provided and verified emissions data.

By using Veracity by DNV, customers can now automatically exchange their emissions data with Berenberg’s EUA trading engine via a predefined file format. According to the bank, this enables it to provide its clients with specific quotations for the purchase of EUAs (CO2 Certificates).

Together with Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), one of the world’s leading ship managers and part of the Schulte Group, DNV and Berenberg have created an industry standard to comply with the regulations of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), which was extended to shipping in 2024.

“Our new CO2 Certificate trading offering has already been used by more than 100 clients in its first year. We are therefore very pleased to now further expand our offering,” says Philipp Wünschmann, Head of Shipping at Berenberg.

“By combining BSM’s automated emissions-related compliance system with the platform capabilities of DNV and Berenberg, we can use the emissions data from our managed fleet and translate the results of the data verification directly into a purchase offer for the required amount of EUAs,” says Alexander Senteris, Compliance Manager Emission Trading Systems at BSM. This is a unique process integration that can significantly reduce manual effort and streamline the entire data flow.
