Christening of the "Disney Adventure" in Singapore, in the center Robert Downey Jr.

“Disney Adventure” christened in Singapore

Eight years after construction began in Wismar, the maiden voyage of the “Disney Adventure” will start on March 10. The ship already has a long and unusual history behind it.

On March 4, Disney Cruise Line’s cruise ship “Disney Adventure” was christened in Singapore for service in Southeast Asia. The naming ceremony took place at the Walt Disney Theatre on board the ship and included performances by regional singers and musicians, a 23-piece orchestra and appearances by Captain Mickey Mouse and Captain Minnie Mouse. Jed Madela (member of the Hollywood Performing Arts Hall of Fame) and internationally renowned Eurovision artist Dami Im led the show with classic Disney, Pixar and Marvel tunes, accompanied by stunning visual effects that came to life on screens around the stage and seemed to envelop the audience.

The godfather, US actor Robert Downey Jr, Oscar winner and best known for his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, gave the ship a distant blessing. “To be the godfather of this majestic ship is an honor,” he said during the ceremony. “I christen thee ‘Disney Adventure,’ may God bless this ship and all who sail upon it.”

Downey Jr added: “I have had the privilege of meeting the team at Walt Disney Imagineering, and I can assure you that Adventure is the perfect name for their work,” he said. “To be the sponsor of this majestic ship is an honor, and I have some important responsibilities to fulfill.

Disney Cruise Line’s largest ship

“As the first ship to homeport in Asia, Disney Adventure marks a new chapter for Disney Cruise Line and will introduce Disney to audiences who may be experiencing our magic for the first time. It offers fans in this region the opportunity to immerse themselves in unforgettable ways and create unique Disney memories,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences and new chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company. “The Walt Disney Company has always been founded on the power of storytelling and innovation – and Disney Cruise Line brings these values to life in extraordinary ways. Our cruise ships are ambassadors for our brand, bringing joy, wonder and magic to destinations around the world,” said D’Amaro.

The “Disney Adventure” is Disney Cruise Line’s eighth and largest ship to date, with a tonnage of 208,108 GT and a maximum capacity of 6,700 passengers. It has seven themed areas, a Broadway-style musical called “Remember” and the cruise line’s first roller coaster at sea, Ironcycle Test Run. It will embark on its maiden voyage on March 10, followed by an inaugural season of three- and four-day itineraries from Singapore. From its base port, the ship will be deployed primarily for the Asian cruise market over the next five years.

From the “Global Dream” to the “Disney Adventure”

The ship, originally planned as the “Global Dream”, has a long and unusual construction history behind it. It was built at the then MV shipyards in Rostock and Wismar for Dream Cruises, part of the Genting Group, and a sister ship was also originally planned. The keel was officially laid in Rostock on September 11, 2018.

Following the insolvency of MV Werften and its parent company Genting Hong Kong in connection with the coronavirus pandemic, the American Disney Cruise Line acquired the almost completed and largest cruise ship built to date from the insolvency estate for around €40 billion in 2022 after lengthy negotiations. If no buyer had been found, the ship might even have had to be scrapped. Disney commissioned the Meyer shipyard with the extensive conversion and completion, which founded the company Meyer Wismar specifically for this purpose.

After leaving the large building dock in Wismar on April 19, 2025, the ship was moved to Bremerhaven in the summer of 2025 for the final refit, which involved thousands of craftsmen. However, as this work required more time than originally planned, the official delivery of the ship, which cost around €2.5 billion, was delayed until December 16. On January 4, the ship left the Columbus quay in Bremerhaven and initially set course for the Caribbean and Port Canaveral in the US state of Florida. After passing through the Panama Canal – the largest ship ever to take this shortcut and link between the Atlantic and Pacific – and stops in Los Angeles and the Japanese capital Tokyo, the christening ceremony marked the end of a lengthy construction process.
