Danaos expands its fleet

The shipowner Danaos has announced an extraordinary special dividend in addition to its quarterly dividend. Shareholders will receive a total of $6 per share.

For the third quarter of 2026, the shipping company, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, will pay a regular dividend of $1 per share. In addition, there will be a one-off special dividend of $5 per share. Danaos Corporation is one of the world’s largest independent owners of container ships and operates an asset-heavy business model, under which the fleet is predominantly chartered out on medium- to long-term time-charter contracts to major liner shipping companies such as MSC, Hapag-Lloyd or CMA CGM.

Both distributions will be made on 22 October. Shareholders registered at the close of trading on 13 October are entitled to receive the dividends. Danaos does not give a reason for the special dividend in the announcement.

28 container ships under construction

According to the company, Danaos’ existing container fleet comprises 78 vessels with a total capacity of 502,265 TEU. A further 28 container ships, with a combined capacity of 177,776 TEU, are under construction. Including these newbuilds, the total capacity amounts to 680,041 TEU. Danaos charters out its container ships at fixed rates to major liner shipping companies.

In addition, the company operates in the bulk carrier segment. Danaos has acquired eleven Capesize bulkers and has ordered four new Newcastlemax vessels. Upon full delivery, the vessels are expected to have a total deadweight tonnage of around 2.79 million dwt.
