Conoship launches new design for container feeder vessels

The Dutch design firm Conoship has developed a new ship design for a container feeder vessel. It is based on a short-sea concept that has already been chosen by German shipowners, amongst others, for newbuilds.

With the CIP230 TEU feeder vessel, Conoship aims to expand its portfolio of standard designs for short-sea shipping. According to a press release , it is based on the CIP3800 platform , for which there have been “more than 30” orders worldwide in recent years , including from Germany.

The Dutch company states that the CIP230 TEU was developed in response to market demand for flexible capacity in the micro-feeder segment and offers “maximum flexibility with different container sizes” as well as high fuel efficiency. The vessel is designed for regional container routes, smaller port operations and short-sea logistics. No specific order has been announced as yet.

The design features a configuration without a hatch cover and with continuous cell layout. The maximum capacity is 230 TEU, 113 FEU or 48 45-foot units.

According to the information provided, the power and propulsion system is based on a diesel-electric configuration comprising four main generators, each with an output of 350 kW, and two electric motors (600 kW each), which are connected via a gearbox to a fixed-pitch propeller. “This configuration enables a calculated fuel consumption of approximately 5 tonnes of marine gas oil (MGO) per day at a test speed of 11.0 knots,” it is stated.

The engine room architecture and the ship’s layout are designed to allow for the future integration of alternative fuels. Furthermore, the platform is designed in such a way that modifications for wind-assisted propulsion, battery support or CO₂ capture systems can be integrated.
