China completes world’s first FPSO ship with CO2 storage

An innovative floating production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO) with an integrated CO₂ capture and storage system has been completed in Shanghai.

The ship is the first of its kind in the world and, according to a report by the Chinese media portal Science and Technology Daily, is due to be delivered by the end of February

The FPSO is 333 meters long and 60 meters wide and has a daily production capacity of up to 120,000 bbl of crude oil. The broadcaster CCTV has published a video about the project:

Particularly noteworthy is the FPSO’s ability to capture CO₂ emissions during both navigation and oil production. In addition, the ship uses the waste heat from the exhaust gases to generate electricity, thereby simultaneously meeting environmental protection and energy efficiency targets.

Offshore oil and gas production causes considerable amounts of CO₂ emissions every year. According to many experts, the use of CO₂ capture and storage technologies on such ships offers a promising opportunity to reduce emissions from offshore production and processing.
