Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement opens new training center in Ghana. The new MTC is the sixth facility of its kind.
Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) has opened a new Maritime Training Center (MTC) in Ghana, further consolidating its position in the region. The new MTC is located on the campus of the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Accra, Ghana, with which BSM established a local representative office and cadet program in 2012.
According to the information provided, the courses offered focus on the professional training and education of cadets, officers and ratings and therefore represent a useful addition to the programs offered by the university. In addition, tailor-made training is offered for crew in the hospitality industry for cruise ships.
“At BSM, we place great emphasis on the selection, development and management of our people at sea, which is critical to the safe and efficient operation of our customers’ vessels,” says Eva Rodriguez, HR Marine Director at BSM. “We are also responding to the growing demand for qualified crew members by diversifying our crew pool.”
BSM has been investing in the training of African seafarers for over a decade. With 1.5 billion people, a number that is expected to double by 2050, and an estimated total nominal GDP of $2.8 trillion, the African continent is one of the largest growth markets in the world.
BSM began training African seafarers back in 2012. At that time, the pool of West African BSM seafarers numbered less than 30 people. Today, the company has 600 seafarers from the region in its crew pool. The new MTC in Ghana is BSM’s sixth facility of its kind.
