Briese wins contract for research vessels

The Leer-based shipping company Briese has once again been awarded the contract in a new tender for the management of the German government’s research vessels.

These are the so-called “medium-sized” research vessels “Alkor”, “Heincke”, “Elisabeth Mann Borgese” and “Maria S. Merian”. Briese Research, part of the Leer Shipping Group, once again won the tender.

Briese has been managing the fleet on behalf of the state-owned ship owners for 20 years. This contract will be extended for a further five years from 1 January 2025. The agreement includes options for two three-year extensions, the company has now announced.

Briese employs 250 seafarers on research vessels

“The renewed contract gives us maximum planning security,” says Klaus Küper, Head of the department at Briese. Together with the management of the research vessels “Senckenberg”, “Littorina”, “Meteor III”, “Sonne” and the “Meteor IV” currently under construction, the employment of around 250 German-speaking seafarers can be secured in the long term.

In addition to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, clients include institutes such as Geomar in Kiel, the Institute for Baltic Sea Research in Warnemünde and the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven.
