Boskalis connects Baltic Sea wind farm “Gennaker” to the grid

The Dutch offshore service provider Boskalis, together with TKF Subsea Solutions, has been awarded a contract for the “Gennaker” offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea.

The contract covers the delivery and installation of the complete park-internal cable system. According to the company, the order volume is in the range of €50 to 150 million.

Specifically, around 140 km of inter-array cables with a voltage of 66 kV are to be laid. In future, they will connect the 63 planned wind turbines within the wind farm. The cables will be manufactured by TKF in the Netherlands, while Boskalis will be responsible for the installation.

“Boka Ocean” will be used

The cable ship “Boka Ocean” will be used for this, with deployment planned from the end of 2027. The unit, which is around 138 m long and around 28 m wide, has a DP2 positioning system and is designed for installation and maintenance work in the offshore industry. The equipment includes cable turntables with a high loading capacity, cranes for heavy installation work and underwater technology for precise operations on the seabed.

Hamburg company develops offshore wind farm

The “Gennaker” offshore wind farm, developed by Hamburg-based operator and owner of offshore wind turbines Skyborn Renewables, is set to become the largest wind farm in the German Baltic Sea with an installed capacity of 976.5 MW. Once completed, the plant will supply around one million households with electricity. Commissioning is planned for 2028.

Boskalis is already involved in the project: Its subsidiary Heinrich Hirdes is currently carrying out investigations and clearance work for explosive ordnance in the construction area.
