First DNV biofuel-certification for Wallenius Wilhelmsen

At SMM in Hamburg, the classification society DNV awarded the shipping and logistics company Wallenius Wilhelmsen its first biofuel certificate.

Biofuels can have a direct impact on greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. However, they come at a higher cost and shipowners need to be sure that they can benefit from their additional investment in sustainability and compliance. Verified biofuel blending makes this possible by creating transparency throughout the supply chain in a “book and claim” system.

DNV certifies biofuel use with 100% biofuel (B100) for the first time

DNV has worked with Wallenius Wilhelmsen to verify the greenhouse gas reduction achieved by using 100% biofuel (B100) on the vehicle carrier “Morning Post”. By consuming this biofuel, bunkered in the port of Antwerp-Bruges, which comes entirely from sustainable sources, the ship reduced its CO2 equivalent by 90% on a well-to-wake basis during its scheduled voyage. This certification is DNV’s first commercial verification of biofuel use with 100% biofuel (B100) and marks a new chapter in shipping’s journey towards decarbonisation.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen aims for net zero by 2040

“Our goal is to lead the transformation of our industry towards a low-carbon future, and the increased use of sustainable biofuel will help us achieve this goal and meet our net-zero commitment for 2040,” said Jørgen Westrum Thorsen, Senior Manager Sustainability, Wallenius Wilhelmsen. “Our customers are integral partners on this net zero journey, so working closely with DNV is an important step to ensure we can consistently deliver verified emissions reductions to our customers.”

DNV has developed a more individualised verification service for biofuels

DNV has developed a verification service for biofuels that covers all steps of the process, from establishing an emissions baseline, through the inset process and system validation, to issuing a verification statement and assisting with Scope 3 balancing. The service can be tailored to the individual customer and helps to build trust and robust processes in this new market by managing the complexity.
