Anemoi receives type approval for rotor sail design

Anemoi Marine Technologies has received a Type Approval Design Certificate (TADC) for its rotor sails from the classification society DNV.

The approval was presented during a ceremony at this year’s SMM. The certificate confirms that the rotor sail (5-metre diameter, 35-metre height) complies with DNV’s technical standard (ST-0511) for wind-assisted propulsion systems.

“We are very pleased to have received this important Type Approval from DNV, which is a confirmation of the rigorous design and development work of our team,” said Anemoi CEO Kim Diederichsen. “This certification gives shipowners and operators the confidence they need to invest in our 5x35m rotor sail solution, which has already been selected for upcoming installations on several vessels.”

Hasso Hoffmeister, Senior Principal Engineer at DNV Maritime, sees wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) on the rise. “In recent years, WAPS technologies have become increasingly prevalent, with the number of installations tripling in the last year alone, according to IWSA estimates,” he said.

“This growth is based on innovation, security and reliable expertise. We are delighted to build on our excellent working relationship with Anemoi by being awarded this certificate. Together we will continue to work on the development of technical standards and class designations that will allow WAPS to gain further momentum and promote the shipping industry’s quest for greater sustainability.”

Rotor sail from Anemoi already in use

Anemoi’s 5x35m rotor sail was installed in May 2024 on the DNV-classed bulk carrier “Berge Neblina” owned by Berge Bulk. This represents the first commercial deployment of this product size.

Anemoi has already received a full Statement of Design Appraisal for the 5x35m Rotor Sail and plans further installations this year and into 2025, including on the “Sohar Max”, a 400,000 dwt VLOC operated by Vale.
