Abeking & Rasmussen highlights custom shipbuilding

Abeking & Rasmussen, Lemwerder

Founded in 1907, Abeking & Rasmussen (A&R) is an independent, family-owned shipyard based in Lemwerder, Germany. With more than 6,500 vessels delivered, the yard has built an international reputation for quality, innovation and engineering expertise.

More than 500 employees work across five production halls, with design, engineering and construction carried out in-house. A&R’s activities are centred on four core business areas: naval vessels, specialised vessels, superyachts, and refit & services, including maintenance as well as classification and survey work.

A&R is a long-standing partner to navies and public authorities worldwide, having delivered more than 360 naval and specialised vessels. Recent projects include mine countermeasure vessels for the Indonesian Navy, built from high-strength, non-magnetic steel using 3D laser welding technology. The yard has also delivered a 105-metre hydrographic survey vessel to the Indonesian Navy for research and search and rescue operations.

The shipyard is internationally recognised for its expertise in SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) technology. It is currently building pilot transfer vessels for the Dutch and German pilot services, designed to provide high seakeeping performance, safety and operational efficiency.

A&R is also constructing three 105-metre multi-purpose vessels for the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration. The first vessel, Scharhörn, was handed over in June last year. According to the company, the vessels are the first of their kind to operate exclusively on LNG and have been designed for deployment in hazardous environments.

A&R has deliberately remained a boutique superyacht builder, constructing no more than one fully custom yacht per year. Its latest delivery, the 118-metre “Liva”, is the largest yacht ever built by the yard and features a distinctive black hull.
