Yang Ming is in the mood for more new buildings

The three newbuildings recently purchased by Shoei Kisen were just the beginning for Yang Ming. The tenth-largest liner shipping company wants to order more container ships.

According to broker reports, Yang Ming has invited shipyards to submit bids for a total of ten more ships. According to the information, the liner shipping company, which operates in a consortium with ONE and HMM, wants to order three conventionally operated units, each with a capacity of 8,000 TEU, as well as seven larger vessels with 15,000 TEU and LNG dual-fuel propulsion. The tender runs until April 15. [ds_preview]

Yang Ming recently acquired three container ships from Japanese company Shoei Kisen, which will be built at Imabari in Japan and delivered in 2028/29.

The newbuilding program had already been announced by the shipping company last year. Brokers expect the three major Korean shipyards – Hyundai, Hanwha and Samsung – to bid, as well as Imabari and CSCB from Taiwan.

Although Chinese shipyards have reportedly not been ruled out, experts believe it is unlikely that they will be awarded the contract. The reason for this is the fees announced by the USA for all ships built in China when calling at US ports. Yang Ming also finds itself as a de facto state-owned shipping company in the midst of increasing tensions between China and Taiwan.
