The Chinese shipyard Wuhu Shipyard has signed a contract with the Hamburg-based shipping group Nordic Hamburg Group and its partners for the construction of three multipurpose heavy-lift project carriers with a deadweight tonnage of 13,300 dwt each.
There is also an option to build two more units. An insider from the shipyard confirmed this to HANSA. The newbuildings are versatile MPP units with a design without hatch covers and have a cargo hold volume of around 26,500 m³. The combined lifting capacity is 500 tons, making the vessels particularly suitable for oversized project cargo, such as components for wind energy, as well as a wide variety of general cargo.
Modern technologies such as an SCR system, an optimized hull shape and intelligent operating controls are intended to reduce fuel consumption by more than 20% compared to older units. In addition, the ships are designed for ice travel and have comprehensive safety solutions.
For the Nordic Hamburg Group, the order represents a further fleet modernization. The shipping group, headquartered in Hamburg, operates 86 ships and is active at five international locations. It is regarded as an innovative player with experience in newbuilding projects and alternative propulsion systems. The decision in favor of Wuhu underlines the confidence in the shipyard’s technical expertise and project strength.
