World’s largest port initiates “Green Corridors” with Wilhelmshaven and Hamburg

The world’s busiest port, Ningbo-Zhoushan, wants to set up three new “Green Corridors” to expand environmentally friendly transportation to Europe and has announced a new initiative – including with Hamburg and Wilhelmshaven.

Several Chinese state media are currently reporting on the initiative of the port of Ningbo-Zhoushan south of Shanghai.

According to the report, the port has launched initiatives jointly with three major European ports – Hamburg and Wilhelmshaven in Germany and Valencia in Spain – to establish environmentally friendly shipping corridors and promote cooperation between China and Europe in the field of low-carbon port operations.

Under the initiatives, the participating ports will work with shipping companies, cargo owners, energy providers, research institutions and other stakeholders to promote carbon-free technologies, clean fuels and smart management systems on the designated routes.

Ningbo-Zhoushan Port officially handles more than 300 container services, including over 250 international routes connecting over 600 ports in more than 200 countries and regions. The complex is also an important location in China in the bulk segment and for liquid cargo.

According to the information provided, the most important measures include the construction and use of shore power infrastructure, the optimization of freight distribution networks, the introduction of renewable energy solutions and the expansion of clean fuel bunkering. The aim is to create corridors in which carbon emissions from the port of departure to the terminal port are zero.
