The shortsea shipping company WEC Lines is expanding its service between Great Britain and continental Europe with the deployment of an additional ship and new ports of call.
The feeder carrier, which also has Hamburg in its network and works with Lidl shipping company Tailwind, among others, wants to improve its service between Spain, the UK and Ireland.
Specifically, this involves the Spanish port of Bilbao. The port authority there has now announced that WEC Lines has been deploying a second ship on the service since last week. The aim is to enable “a faster weekly route and new ports of call” and thus provide an alternative to road transport from Spain. Specifically, this means that an 812 TEU and an 822 TEU ship will be deployed in future.
The new service, which has been renamed NWC Spain, departs from Bilbao on Fridays and arrives in Liverpool on Mondays and Dublin on Wednesdays. With the new ports of call, the route includes Antwerp, Le Havre, Montoir-de-Bretagne, Bilbao, Gijón, Liverpool and Dublin.
In addition, short transit times of seven and two days respectively will be offered from Antwerp and Montoir-de-Bretagne to Bilbao, facilitating rail connections to Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, Zaragoza and Agoncillo (La Rioja). From Liverpool, fast rail connections will be offered to Belfast, Mossend and Greenock.
