The Dutch hydraulic engineering company Van Oord has been awarded the contract for the land reclamation of Naïa Island Dubai.
The new development area is located off the coast of Jumeirah and covers around 13 hectares with a total of 6 km of beachfront. The client is the Dubai-based investment company Shamal Holding.
The project is one of a series of prominent projects in which Van Oord has been involved in the United Arab Emirates, including Palm Jumeirah, the World Islands and Dubai Harbour. The aim is to create an island with a largely natural character and generous green and coastal areas.
More than 28 million m³ of sand and around 4.3 million tons of rock are to be brought in for land reclamation. Van Oord is also building marine infrastructure such as quay walls and culverts. Existing beaches and breakwaters (groynes) will also be realigned in order to optimize coastal protection and tourist use.
Van Oord intends to use modern methods for soil consolidation, supported by a fleet of hopper dredgers, rock placement vessels and other specialized equipment. Completion is scheduled for the first half of 2027.
“This project will enable us to use our core expertise in land reclamation, which we have been continuously developing since the company was founded,” explained CEO Govert van Oord.
