Ultrasonic antifouling: Alfa Laval takes over NRG Marine

The Swedish supplier Alfa Laval wants to increase its involvement in the antifouling market by acquiring NRG Marine.

An agreement has been signed with the British specialist in ultrasonic antifouling solutions for marine, oil and gas and industrial applications, Alfa Laval announced.

The transaction is described as “in line with Alfa Laval’s strategy to offer its customers environmentally friendly solutions that significantly contribute to improving operational efficiency, reducing costs and extending the life cycle of equipment”. The acquisition is expected to be completed in Q2 2025.

By adding NRG Marine’s ultrasonic technology, the Swedes aim to expand their portfolio with an innovative solution for antifouling. The NRG solution uses microscopic ultrasonic bubbles that implode, creating a movement that disrupts the surface environment. This movement is designed to passively clean the surface.

“A strategic step”

Sameer Kalra, President Marine Division, Alfa Laval, said: “The addition of ultrasonic antifouling technology to our portfolio is another addition to our decarbonization toolbox. By addressing the critical issue of biofouling with this advanced technology, we are enabling our customers to achieve both business and environmental goals.”

Darren Rowlands, founder and CEO of NRG Marine, said he was delighted to join forces with Alfa Laval through this acquisition “to extend ultrasonic anti-fouling technology to the marine, oil and gas and other industries.” It is the ideal partner and the “strategic move” is intended to increase market reach and scalability.

The system can reportedly be installed on any type of vessel, whether it is a new build or an existing ship, and does not require dry docks or hull penetrations, which should minimize installation time and associated costs.
