TKMS delivers submarine and is already building the next one

At TKMS in Kiel, one submarine is finished and the next one is already being built. The company speaks of “milestones”.

The “INS Drakon” is the third submarine of the HDW Dolphin class to be completed for the Israeli navy. At the same time, production of the first submarine of the “Dakar” class began.

Oliver Burkhard, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, emphasised the long-standing partnership with the Israeli Navy. The start of production for the new class submarine marks a new chapter in the cooperation and once again demonstrates the first-class expertise of the team at the Kiel shipyard.

TKMS modifies Dolphin class

Compared to the two sister submarines of the Dolphin II class already in service, “INS Tanin” and “INS Rahav”, the third unit has undergone very noticeable design changes. The turret section has been completely redesigned and is now significantly longer and wider. The change in length and displacement presumably serves to accommodate new weapon systems, writes the HANSA sister magazine “Europäische Sicherheit & Technik“.

The two submarines that have already been delivered were delivered to the Israeli Navy after the standard construction period of seven years.

thyssenkrupp Marine Systems is one of the world’s leading companies in the marine industry with around 7,800 employees at three shipyards in Kiel, Wismar and Itajaí (Brazil) as well as at locations worldwide. The company is a system supplier for submarines and naval surface vessels as well as for maritime electronics and safety technology. Around 3,300 employees work in Kiel, making it the largest shipyard location in Germany.
