The German shipbuilder TKMS has agreed a cooperation with the North American company Cohere – active in the field of safety-oriented AI – to advance the integration of artificial intelligence in the Canadian submarine program.
As part of the collaboration, the companies will explore applications for advanced voice and data-driven models to support decision-making processes, on-board information management, training environments and secure naval interfaces, it has been announced.
“Canada’s next-generation submarine program provides the opportunity to integrate the most advanced and reliable technologies into the Royal Canadian Navy. Cohere’s expertise in trustworthy AI models fits perfectly with our vision. Together, we aim to improve the user experience and operational efficiency of future crews while maintaining the highest safety standards,” said Thomas Keupp, Chief Sales Officer at TKMS.
Canada is considered an important market by TKMS executives. A local representative office was opened last year. According to TKMS, the cooperation underlines its own commitment to integrating Canadian companies into its supply chain throughout the entire life cycle of its platforms.
Cohere is a security-focused enterprise AI company headquartered in Toronto and San Francisco, with additional offices in London, New York, Montreal, Paris and Seoul. It develops innovative base models and end-to-end AI products.
The partnership will focus on research, prototyping and evaluation activities. Both companies emphasized that all AI-enabled capabilities will meet the stringent safety, compliance and operational requirements of the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian government. “Submarines are the ultimate high-risk workplace. Through our partnership with TKMS, we are integrating key solutions that enable mariners to act decisively,” said Dave Ferris, VP of Americas and Global Public Sector at Cohere.
