Dual-fuel, biofuel, batteries and sails: Swedish shipping company Terntank is expanding its order book: Five tankers with sailing systems are coming from China.
Terntank has now announced the increase in its order book and is taking up the option for a fifth ship for the chemicals market. Plans to order a series of chemical and product tankers with a capacity of 15,000 dwt were first announced in March 2024. They will be equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system that can be operated with MGO, biofuels and methanol. A sail system is also to be installed as support. Battery packs are also part of the overall solution.
First new tanker to be built in 2025
Four newbuilds were initially planned, but an option has now been taken out for a fifth ship at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou) Dingheng. This is already the eleventh “joint ship” for Terntank and the shipyard.
The first ship in the series is currently under construction and will be delivered in March 2025, with the fifth expected in July 2027. Terntank currently operates ten vessels with a deadweight tonnage of between 10,000 and 15,000 dwt and an average age of six years.
