Technolog-Design receives LR approval

The design for a new type of container feeder ship developed by the German design office Technolog on behalf of Seaspan has been approved by Lloyd’s Register (LR).

The design envisages a 198-metre-long vessel that will initially be powered by LNG, but can also be converted to run on ammonia at a later date, according to a statement[ds_preview].

Following the approval in principle (AiP) by the British classification society, the world’s largest tramp shipping company Seaspan and the Hamburg-based company Technolog want to start the next phase together with LR, which will focus on the design for a dual-fuel feeder ship that could use ammonia as a fuel.

Technolog delivers future-proof design

“Seaspan and LR have been working together successfully for many years,” says Peter Jackson, SVP of Assets and Technology at Seaspan. This has involved topics such as cargo losses, the reduction of methane and the energy transition at sea.

The new ship design represents a solution that meets current market requirements and anticipates future challenges and opportunities in the maritime industry, he adds.

Seaspan is the largest independent tonnage provider in the container shipping industry. The fleet currently comprises 165 vessels, with a further 23 vessels under construction and scheduled for delivery by December 2024. In addition, the company has signed contracts for the construction of six PCTC (Pure Car, Truck Carrier) newbuildings with a capacity of 10,800 CEU.
