All 16 crew members are believed to have died in a shipwreck off the coast of Oman. The search for them has so far been unsuccessful.
The seamen were on board the product tanker “Prestige Falcon” (built in 2007, 7,056 GT), which capsized off the coast of Oman, according to the country’s maritime authority. The accident reportedly occurred 25 nm southeast of Ras Madrakah. The Maritime Safety Centre of Oman announced that search and rescue operations for the 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankan seafarers will continue.
Tanker apparently not attacked by Houthis
According to AIS data, the ship had last arrived in Al Hamriyah in the United Arab Emirates a week ago and was on its way to the southern Yemeni port of Aden before the accident.
So far, there are no indications that the tanker could have been the target of a Houthi attack. It is still unclear what could have led to the accident.
The Omani authorities announced on the social media platform X that the tanker was registered under the flag of the Comoros. According to reports, the ship was last inspected by port state control authorities in 2009.
